Baseline Study of the Project “Literacy Boost in Kavre District” (2016)
The progress in Nepal’s education sector over 15 years shows literacy and enrollment rates, despite having improved. However, challenging issues like low learning outcomes, poor early-grade reading skills, and high dropout and repetition rates remain significant. This highlights a need for targeted interventions to enhance education quality and equity.
Save the Children and Nangshal Association Nepal collaborated on a project in Kavrepalanchok district to improve the quality and competency in fundamental reading and numeracy skill among early grade children, for which the project adopted the strategy of enhancing teachers’ capacity to address individual learning needs and competencies for all students, irrespective of their gender, language, ability and religion.
NIRT providing consultancy service to Save the Children and Nangshal Association Nepal to carry out the baseline survey, was successful in achieving the objectives of the assignment, utilizing Literacy Boost Assessment Tools by Save the Children, focusing on ‘Enhancing access and quality in education’ by assessing the language and mathematics skills of Grade 2 students, analyzing families’ socio-economic backgrounds, and evaluating the learning environment in Literacy Boost classrooms; with an outcome including an end-line report with an analytical section.
